Finally getting around to posting photos from my trip to South Dakota back in August and I honestly could not be happier with how they turned out. Going some place new and capturing the raw beauty is definitely a challenge, but South Dakota, boy were you worth it. This shot is from my first night there. We got to our hotel and got settled, but my heart was itching to explore. And so I set out, with camera in hand, leaving my family to rest. Just a two block walk from our hotel I found myself in what seemed like a new world entirely. South Dakota , thank you for your beauty, your raw and bare beauty.
Day 2 in South Dakota called for settling to take the 'scenic route' back to our hotel from an outing to Mount Rushmore. About 2/3 of the way through Custer State Park, we shrugged and sighed, having seen no signs of wild life other than squirrels and birds. But seemingly out of nowhere the cars in front of us came to a stop, and before we knew it park rangers on horseback came galloping past, cracking whips as they went. As we rounded the bend, I saw the most incredible sight as hundreds of buffalo stampeded over the road, across the fields and into the depths of the forest. What an incredibly wild and free feeling it was to experience that so up close.
When you find yourself in Rapid City, South Dakota on what also happens to be the week of Sturgis Rally, you find yourself surrounded by more motorcycles than you've ever seen before. Bikers and enthusiasts travel from near and far, east and west, and come together for this week long adventure of unity and riding the beautiful highways of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Near year marks the 77th annual rally, and I know that people are already counting down the days. I don't know much about motorcycles, but one thing I do know is that those South Dakota roads and views certainly do not disappoint.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
